Here we go again

05Aug06

I was having dinner earlier and listening to news. The same news of the last three days, cause that’s what local news like to broadcast here. And then the weather comes on. And I thought of the statistics I heard about from Fox news on the radio the other day [I hate Fox cause they are so skewed but I love listening to how they brainwash Americans]…how the topic of weather is in the 83% of interest in news.
The topic: It’s hot. There is a heat wave. Boo! Every day in July and August, it’s hot. Every year, everywhere. You will always hear the following comment come out of people’s mouths as they watch the segment “Oh I never remember it being this hot last year!”. C’mon people.

Back in the land of Greece, in the August, for 12 yrs I took cold showers 3 times a day, ate fruit and veggies, went to the beach and lived with fans. Europeans don’t leave their house without a cold bottle of water. And they refill it numerous times a day, while out. People here are enclosed in air conditioned areas. They can’t stand the heat cause they haven’t really dealt with it…

After the amazingly interesting weather report, the topic of global warming came up next…posing questions like: are we only causing it?..is it only the gases? etc
One of the people I was dinning with asked: “What is global warming anyway?”
I didn’t open my mouth. I got that irritating feeling again. Was in anger? confusion?

Just the same ol’ questions: “Why are people ignorant?”, “Whose fault is it?”

If you are not taught or told something why do you not have the genuine interest to research or look up that something? You rely on a medium of communication to inform you, but it’s not always successful.

For ex. :: Will another article help? a book? a blog? No. None have pure success in educating someone. It’s a skim in the short term memory compartment of our brain.
Will an obese person take my book about how to deal with obesity and read it right away? Probably not. They will use it as a coaster for their strawberry shake from Meecee Dees.
The government should enforce nutrition programs in schools but hey, they are making tons of money off of overweight people, no?
Lets make more foods with preservatives, more microwavable meals, 24 hr drive trough’s…it all makes sense, doesn’t it?
There needs to be an innovative way of communication.
The old methods are simply blurry to me. I literally don’t watch TV news. It’s all drama and forcing fear on folks. Filters, filters, filters. It’s the media and news’s job to relay the above issues correctly, but they are limited in what and how they can say things.

Money, power, government, bleh. Oh, and people like to be spoonfed .
So tell me, is ignorance truly a bliss to you?

Talking of ignorance, I just got this fwd:

A scene took place on a BA (British Airway) flight between Johannesburg and London. A white woman, about 50 years old, was seated next to a black man. Obviously disturbed by this, she called the air Hostess. “Madam, what is the matter?” the hostess asked. “You obviously do not see it then?” She responded. “You placed me next to a black man. I do not agree to sit next to someone from such a repugnant group. Give me an alternative seat.” “Be calm please,” the hostess
replied. “Almost all the places on this flight are taken. I will go to see if another place is available.” The hostess went away and then
came back a few minutes later.

“Madam, just as I thought, there are no other available seats in the economy class. I spoke to the captain and he informed me that there is one seat in the business class. All the same, we also have one seat in the first class.” Before the woman could say anything, the hostess continued: “It is unusual for our company to permit someone from the economy class to sit in the first class. However, given the circumstances, the captain feels that it would be scandalous to make someone sit next to someone so disgusting.”

She then turned to the black guy, and said, “Therefore, sir, if you would like to, please collect your hand luggage, a seat awaits you in first class.”

At the moment, the other passengers who were shocked by what they had just witnessed stood up and applauded. This is a true story.

If ignorance tastes like a meal from my favorite 24 hour drive thru then sign me up!

Bottom line, all the news and info is slanted to some degree. You’re not going to get it clean unless you do it yourself. American news is slanted to American views, European news is slanted to European views, etc. I guess it’s a matter of who you choose to trust and believe. And if you don’t care all that much, you can just choose to be ignorant. What’s great is that you can choose.

An innovative way of communication would be great. Well, let’s see, we started with speaking…that didn’t work…then the written language…no dice…radio…tv…internet…maybe we’ll get it right someday, but I doubt it. What it always comes down to is the individual’s choice. Some of us care. Some of us don’t. Most of us care if the issues directly affect us in our everyday lives. The weather does. It’s hot…we sweat…the grass dies. We care about the weather. Global warming…fancy term…polar ice caps melting…I don’t see it in the backyard…oh well…out of sight out of mind.

It comes down to the person, his decisions about educating himself, and taking action. The ball is in his court. Could more be done to educate everyone? Probably. Will it work if no one really cares to listen? Probably not. At the end of a long day, a lot of people just don’t have the energy to get fired up about global warming, the Middle East, and what not. The trick is probably more about how to motivate the individual to care about issues and take initiative than communicating it in a new way.

So as I’m spoonfed my McDonald’s strawberry shake in my air conditioned room, I’ll enjoy my choice to zone out to the weather and think about how much hotter it’s been this summer than last. Maybe tomorrow I’ll choose to find out what exactly is going on in Israel and Syria after I try a new exercise regiment to work off these extra lbs. Where’d I put that excercise book anyway?
